  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dutch-processed cocoa powder (for topping)

  • pinch ground ginger (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF and line two 9×5-inch loaf pans with parchment paper.
  2. In an electric mixer, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, cinnamon, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. Mix buttermilk, water, and vanilla extract in another bowl.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture in three parts, alternating with wet ingredients until fully combined.
  6. Divide batter between loaf pans and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar topping made from additional sugar and spices.
  7. Bake for about 45 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Cool completely before slicing.
